New dental health clinic for University of Maine

New dental health clinic for University of Maine The Bangor campus of the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) will open its new dental hygiene clinic on September 7. Construction of the new facility recently ended, according to the Bangor Daily News, and the occasion prompted a dedication ceremony attended by numerous students, local dental health care professionals and community members.

The news source reports that the new UMA dental facility used to be the ballroom of the NCO Club at the now-decommissioned Dow Air Force Base. It will serve as the replacement to an outdated oral health clinic once located in Lincoln Hall.

A total of 24 dental work stations are available at the new dental clinic, five of which are designed to take dental X-rays from patients. The facility is designed so that all patients receiving care at any given time can have privacy while having their teeth, gums and mouth examined, a documented concern of the community.

UMA received over $600,000 in federal government funding for the new clinic, money that was acquired in part due to the efforts of Congressman Mike Michaud and Senator Susan Collins.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research states that poor brushing and flossing habits, as well as avoiding regular dental exams, are major risk factors for gum disease.
