Researchers debunk link between bone fluoride levels and osteosarcoma

Researchers debunk link between bone fluoride levels and osteosarcoma According to a study conducted by the International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR), no link has been determined to exist between fluoride levels in the bones and the rare but dangerous bone tumor known as osteosarcoma. This study first surfaced in the Journal of Dental Research published by the organization.

Chester Douglass of Harvard University led this study. In it, patients from hospitals throughout the U.S. with recently discovered malignant .one tumors and those with primary osteosarcoma were examined. No significant difference was found in the bone fluoride levels of those specifically afflicted by those with osteosarcoma and those with other forms of bone tumors.

Helen Whelton, vice president of the IADR, confirmed that the study stemmed from persistent fears over fluoride's possible role as an osteosarcoma risk factor.

"The controversy over whether there is an association between fluoride and risk for osteosarcoma has existed since an inconclusive animal study 20 years ago," Whelton said. "This study of using actual bone fluoride concentrations as a direct indicator of fluoride exposure...shows no association between fluoride in bone and osteosarcoma risk."

According to the American Dental Association, fluoride and community water fluoridation are considered to be safe and effective in preventing tooth decay and promoting oral health for children as well as adults.
