The news source reports that dental insurance may be unfavorable. Certain dentists have decried insurance for offering patients fairly unremarkable benefits that grow more expensive each year.

Patients requiring dental services on a budget can seek out colleges offering student dentistry, or examine discount dental plans. Dental students generally charge less and are monitored by experienced faculty, but may not be as reliable as professional dental services.

Discount plans involve arrangements between dental offices and plan providers. They can offer price reductions of anywhere from 30 to 50 percent by having users pay annual fees of about $80 to $150. Interested consumers should ask dentists what plans they accept, according to the news source.

Oral health is known to be important, but its costs can make consumers neglect it. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports 12 percent of adults aged 20 to 64 have not seen a dentist in the past five years, and 23 percent of children 2 to 11 have never visited a dentist.
