Poor oral health may create a negative impression of a person Regardless of how nice an individual's clothes are or how perfectly kempt his or her hair is, bad oral health may indicate that a person has poor overall health or some bad habits.

A recent article published by the Huffington Post highlighted several things that people can tell about person just by looking at their teeth.

Although dentists may be the only ones examining the plaque on a person's teeth, these professionals may note that excessive amounts of buildup likely mean that a patient has poor heart health. The website noted that bacteria that cause plaque to adhere to teeth may make their way into the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the heart, potentially contributing to the development of cardiovascular disease.

The news provider explained that people with visible cavity fillings may be assumed to have trouble with controlling their sugar intake or lacking proper dental hygiene. Moreover, those with stained teeth may be thought of as smokers or drug users, since tobacco and illegal substances have been shown to promote a yellow tint on teeth.

According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, nearly 75 percent of adults think that an unhealthy smile can have a negative effect on a person's career.
