Tips on choosing an orthodontist
Updated: 7/5/2011 8:59:58 PM

Choosing an orthodontist may be especially important for individuals who require extensive treatment Many people who have worn braces know how important finding a good orthodontist is. Some patients require years of orthodontic treatment, but being able to communicate with one's provider may help move the process along more quickly.

A recent article published by the Los Angeles Times offered several tips on how to choose an orthodontist.

First, any type of medical jargon can be confusing to a new patient, so it may be beneficial to do a bit of research on orthodontics.

If individuals have received referrals from friends or family members, they may consider asking their general dentist whether he or she has heard anything about these providers or if they know anyone with good reviews, the newspaper suggested.

The news provider noted that some people may want to get a second opinion if an orthodontist has recommended extensive treatments. Individuals can feel free to shop around for a provider since some specialists offer low-cost initial exams so that prospective patients can meet the orthodontists.

According to the American Academy of Orthodontists, one in every five orthodontic patients is an adult.
