Corrective procedures may help improve oral health
Updated: 4/19/2011 7:00:06 PM

Dentists may find that patients who suffer from frequent facial pain have misaligned jaws Many individuals who do avoid going to the dentist live with chronic oral conditions or pain. Providers from one Northern Virginia dental practice recently discussed some advances in cosmetic dentistry that may help alleviate these problems.

The dentists explained that implants can be used to correct untreated gum disease, severely decayed teeth or root damage, as well as to replace teeth that have been lost due to an injury.

Frequent muscle tension, headaches or earaches may be the result of a misaligned jaw, the practitioners said. This condition may cause teeth that have been straightened with braces to revert to crooked positions.

"There must be a balance between the teeth, jaw joint and muscles of your mouth to achieve lasting results," the dentists said.

According to the American Dental Association, dentists can diagnose the source of jaw pain by conducting thorough examinations or using X-rays. The organization notes that other causes of this type of discomfort include arthritis, sinus problems, toothaches or the early symptoms of periodontal disease.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research estimates that more than 10 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders.
