The basics of root canal treatments
Updated: 3/28/2011 6:59:59 PM

Despite survey findings that 70 percent of patients fear root canals, the majority of patients said that they were satisfied with their procedures In light of Root Canal Awareness Week, which lasts from March 27 to April 2, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) provided some basic information about the procedure that has gained a negative reputation.

Members of the association said that despite many misconceptions, root canal treatments can be simple and may help people maintain healthy smiles.

"Nothing looks, feels or functions as well as your natural teeth. Choosing to save a tooth with root canal treatment will help you sustain your ability to bite and chew and maintain the natural appearance of your smile," said AAE President Dr. Clara M. Spatafore.

She added that evolving dental technology has helped make these operations safe and comfortable for patients.

The AAE recently conducted a survey to uncover the general public's feelings and understanding about root canals.

The findings showed that 89 percent of patients who had received this treatment from an endodontist were satisfied with their appointments. However, a total of 70 percent reported that they were nervous about the procedure.

Study results also showed that respondents who had undergone the treatment were six times more likely to describe root canals as "painless" than the speculative survey takers.
