Dental experts offer tips for a healthier holiday smile Dr. Gerry Curatola, a dentist at NYU's College of Dentistry, recently offered tips on how people can improve their smile for a low cost during the holiday season, Fox News reports.

Curatola suggested to the news source that individuals should get their end-of-the-year cleaning from their dentist. This helps to remove tartar that may stain the teeth and also cause gums to be swollen or unhealthy.

He indicated that individuals could ask their dentist or hygienist if there is a discount on teeth whitening, as many offices will offer teeth-whitening services at a reduced cost during the holidays.

According to Curatola, people should limit their consumption of holiday sweets because sugar promotes cavities. He suggested to the news source that individuals could opt for nuts or fiber-rich whole grains instead of sugary desserts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that cavities affect people of all ages, including more than 25 percent of U.S. children who are between 2 and 5 years old.

Finally, Curatola told the news provider that people should watch the amount of alcohol they drink, and consume plenty of water. Nutritional supplements like vitamin C and E can also help to keep the body and smile looking healthy this holiday season, he added.
