Proposals raise questions about eliminating dental care in Washington state

Proposals raise questions about eliminating dental care in Washington state The Seattle Medium reports that thousands of individuals in the state of Washington may soon lose out on access to dental care. This is because the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services recently proposed the idea of eliminating oral treatment for low-income, pregnant and disabled residents who are on Medicaid.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, proper dental care is important because it could help to prevent some chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease.

The news source reports that the Washington Dental Service Foundation (WDSF) is one organization that provides preventative dental care to those who are underprivileged in the state. Laura Smith, president and CEO of WDSF, told the newspaper that "it is shortsighted to eliminate prevention programs that people rely on to stay healthy, especially for pregnant women."

The WDSF indicated that individuals' overall health will decrease if they do not have access to dental care. Mark Secord, executive director of Neighborcare Health in Seattle, also told the newspaper that eliminating programs like WDSF will likely create more emergency room visits due to oral problems.

People who lack insurance for themselves or their families can find affordable, low-cost dental coverage.
