Dentists raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene in pregnant women

Dentists raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene in pregnant women Pregnant women could be more susceptible to oral health problems such as gingivitis or passing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) to their unborn child. Although no exact number is known, the CDC reports that FASD could account for nearly 1.5 cases in every 1,000 live births. Having good dental hygiene could be important as dentists have now discovered a way to detect this problem much earlier.

Although FASD can be found in several ways, dentists can spot characteristics around the mouth that could detect this problem, the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reports in a new article. These symptoms could include a thin upper lip or flat nasal bridge.

Peter G. Bastian, spokesperson for the AGD, said that by finding this problem early on dentists can "provide the best care to children with the condition but also help the child's primary care physician to diagnose patients." He adds that those with FASD could eventually face other oral health issues such as cavities or problems breathing.
