Dentures may lead to costly oral infections

Dentures may lead to costly oral infections Denture wearers who lack dental insurance may be able to save themselves an expensive trip to the dentist by making sure to take special care of their oral appliances. These are often prone to colonization from bacteria and other microbes, which can have damaging effects on an individual's dental health.

Margaret Slubowski, a dental care provider in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, recently wrote in Coquitlam Now that Candida albicans, a common oral fungus similar to yeast, thrives on the smooth acrylic surfaces of dental appliances like dentures. The fungus can then infect the rest of the mouth, carrying serious consequences.

"Very rarely do people suspect that the bad condition of removable dentures and other dental appliances may, besides bad breath, also cause serious mouth-related and general health problems," she wrote.

Infections resulting from improperly cleaned dentures can cause a range of oral health issues, including painful lesions, according to the American Dental Association.

For individuals who lack dental insurance, these problems can be financially devastating, as they may require thousands of dollars worth of treatments. Denture wearers may benefit from discount dental plans to avoid having to pay these costs should they contract an infection.
