National dentistry organization, Louisiana State launch free dental care program

National dentistry organization, Louisiana State launch free dental care program The Academy of General Dentistry Foundation has partnered with the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry to launch the Nation of Smiles, One Smile at a Time, an outreach program that will provide free dental care to people without dental insurance.

Dentists, hygienists and dental assistants from across the country will help treat approximately 300 individuals who receive assistance from local shelters, clinics and charities. Also, students from the school's dentistry program will volunteer their time, allowing the future professionals to practice their skills on real-life patients.

"This is the first time we've developed an outreach project with the purpose of giving back to the community," said David F. Halpern, president of the foundation. He added that "it is an honor for our association to serve the underserved populations of New Orleans by providing the oral care that these individuals so desperately need."

While free dental care programs can benefit people with little or no dental insurance, discount dental plans can provide families and individuals with the opportunity to see a dentist on a regular basis. Patients with discount dental plans can also receive a variety of treatments, ranging from annual oral exams to surgical procedures, at a lower cost.
