Overweight children are more likely to suffer from tooth decay A study that was recently presented at The Endocrine Society's annual meeting found that, in addition to causing further dental care complications, tooth decay in young children may also increase the risk of developing obesity.

Researchers examined the association between unhealthy weight gain and poor dental care in 65 children between the ages 2 and 5. The team took blood samples and had each participant receive a dental checkup.

The results of the study showed that 28 percent of the children who had tooth decay also had an unhealthy body mass index. Also, roughly 71 percent of the participants ate more than 1,2000 calories per day, which is the appropriate amount for children their age.

"Dental decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and obesity in youth is a growing problem," said Kathleen Bethin, a pediatrician at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. She added that "to prevent these problems, the dentist's office may be an important place to educate families about nutrition."

While improving their children's diet may prevent tooth decay, parents with little or no dental insurance can find discount programs that can provide their kids with regular treatments. These low-cost plans will allow patients to see a dentist on a regular basis and receive preventative services.
