Dental programs seek to increase access to care

Dental programs seek to increase access to care Many individuals who lack dental insurance may be eligible for state run dental plans that can make accessing dental care more affordable. However, dentists who accept these plans can often be difficult to find in some of the rural areas of the country.

In order to address this lack of dental care in the rural areas of his state, Governor Jim Doyle, of Wisconsin, recently signed a bill that would provide funding for a dental health clinic in the sparsely populated Marshfield area.

Doyle said the clinic would extend access to dental care to low-income families from around the region who are unable to find a dentist.

"Seventy percent of children eligible for dental care are not getting the services they need because they can't find a dentist who is willing to see them," he said, as quoted by local news channel WAOW.

Government run dental plans can help families with no dental insurance pay for dental care, however many dentists do not accept these plans. There are many discount dental plans offered by private carriers that can be an inexpensive way for families to guarantee access to dental care.
