Dental educator to focus on cavity prevention rather than treatment

Dental educator to focus on cavity prevention rather than treatment In an effort to reduce the number of patients suffering from dental health problems like tooth decay, one dental educator is working to change the way the disease is treated by focusing on prevention rather than continuing the "drill and fill" method.

Dr Amid Ismail of the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University recently hosted a panel discussion for dental researchers and educators that focused on creating a standard for treating tooth decay that focuses less on fillings.

Ismail said that too often dentists see the beginnings of a cavity and immediately put a filling in the tooth, but that this type of aggressive treatment is not always necessary.

"Tooth decay progresses in stages," said Ismail. "When spotted in its early stages, the disease can be managed conservatively."

The most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that nearly 27 percent of adults have some kind of tooth decay.
