Braces could benefit younger children, experts say Most people are familiar with seeing braces on children in their teens, but orthodontists are saying that children should get their teeth checked out at younger ages to help avoid problems down the line.

Orthodontists are suggesting the cosmetic dental procedure for younger children because their bones are still growing and soft. This means the corrections can be made faster and with less pain.

Dr Homayoun Aminyar of New York says that braces for children as young as seven can help avoid problems like crowding, abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, misalignment of the jaw joints and stress on the gum tissue and bones that support the teeth.

“There is no need for someone to be unhappy with their teeth, when there are many different orthodontic techniques in order for it to be corrected," he said.

The American Association of Orthodontists estimates that as much as 75 percent of the population could could improve their dental health with braces.
