Recession decaying children's dental health, experts say

Recession decaying children The tough economic times are forcing families to prioritize their spending, but experts are worried that, for many, this means letting their dental care lapse.

This practice can have a particularly devastating impact on children, whose teeth are more susceptible to disease, and who generally gravitate more towards sugary sweets.

Janet Pearcey, executive director of Northwest Dental Coalition in Craig Colorado, told the Craig Daily Press that it's always been difficult to get people to make their oral health a priority, but now the recession is pushing it even further to the background.

"People don't think about oral health, especially when, financially, things are really tough," she told the news source. "That's kind of last on the line."

She added that the problem is compounded by the fact that fewer and fewer practices are accepting discount dental plans like Medicaid.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 22.9 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 19 have some form of untreated dental decay.
