ADA-sponsored dental health program enters its second year

ADA-sponsored dental health program enters its second year Officials with the American Dental Association have announced that its Community Dental Health Coordinator pilot program will welcome its second group of students during its kickoff event at Rio Salado College in Tempe, Arizona on March 26.

The three-year initiative was put in place to train students to become qualified dental health professionals who focus their efforts on underserved communities.

Funded by the ADA, the program is designed to help aspiring activists gain the skills needed to eliminate the social and cultural barriers that often prohibit dental care from being provided to low-income families. Specifically, students will be trained in the areas of oral health education and disease prevention.

Although members of the program will be taught to perform limited preventive procedures, their central mission will be to help underprivileged patients find a provider that can handle their needs.

"We look forward to seeing these individuals return to their communities as trained community health workers and members of the dental team, playing an important role in resolving barriers to help improve residents' dental care," said Raymond Gist, ADA president-elect. "That's what the Community Dental Health Coordinator's program is all about."
