Rapper Lil Wayne has eight root canals in one sitting Earlier this month, rap superstar Lil Wayne had his prison sentence postponed because he was badly in need of serious dental surgery. Last week, the 27-year-old icon, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, had eight root canals to fix his poorly maintained teeth.

During the eight-hour procedure, the rapper, who has claimed that his jewel-encrusted teeth cost approximately $150,000, received several tooth implants and had the few real teeth that he had left repaired, according to TMZ.com.

With the procedure behind him, Lil Wayne will head to Riker's Island prison on March 2 to serve his year-long sentence for a felony weapons charge. Last year, the rap star admitted to illegally carrying a loaded semiautomatic gun on his tour bus in July 2007.

Lil Wayne's marathon dental surgery sheds light on the importance of routine preventative dental care.

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent avoidable dental health problems, such as infection, tooth decay, and cardiovascular disease, according to the American Dental Association.
