Children's dental care clinic to remain open after financial contributions
Updated: 2/9/2010 7:00:08 PM

Dental clinic to remain open after financial contributions The Children's Dental Center at Creston Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, which has provided dental care services to low-income families for the last 50 years, has been able to raise enough money to stay open through the end of the school year.

Last month, the Assistance League of Portland, the longtime benefactor for the center, announced that it was shutting down the facility at the end of February due to financial concerns.

Fortunately, local dentists and private funders from the Multnomah Dental Society stepped in and donated money to keep the clinic open. Multnomah County Commissioner Jeff Cogen is also expected to contribute $20,000 from the county's contingency fund, according to OregonLive.com.

"A few miles from my house, there are kids living in Third World conditions when it comes to dental care," said Kurt Ferre, a retired Portland dentist leading the effort to save the clinic, quoted by the news source. "It just breaks your heart. I wish people could see what we see."

Ferre added that he expects the clinic to have the funding to reopen after the school's summer break.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health.
