Medi-Cal cuts shrink number of Californians receiving dental care

Six months after state officials cut Medi-Cal dental benefits for most Californians, health advocates have indicated that thousands of residents in San Joaquin Valley alone are going without dental care.

Last year, the state legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger cut funding to podiatry, optometry, audiology, speech therapy and dental programs around California in an effort to reduce the state's escalating deficit, the Fresno Bee reports.

According to estimates, cuts in dental care in 2009-2010 will save $80 million in the state general fund.

Between July and December of 2008, almost 35,000 adults in San Joaquin Valley had dental work done, compared to only 11,920 in the period since the Medi-Cal cuts, the news provider says.

Though Medi-Cal continues to cover children, seniors in nursing homes and emergency dental work to reduce pain or infection, most adults will not be insured for procedures like cavity filling, crown or denture fitting, or teeth cleaning.

Californians who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, provide discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most procedures with participating dentists.
