Florida town to discuss fluoridation for better dental health

A city in Florida will discuss the possibility of fluoridating its water supply in an effort to protect the dental health of its citizens.

Plant City, which is located in Hillsborough County, is researching the costs of adding fluoride to its water, according to the Plant City Courier and Tribune. City manager David Sollenberger is expected to present his report on the subject to the city's commissioners on January 25.

"I think it's probably something we probably should be doing," said one commissioner named Mike Sparkman to the news source.

The state occasionally helps cities pay for such initiatives, reports the publication. Furthermore, dentists have long believed adding fluoride to town water supplies can improve dental health.

In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) says it has continuously endorsed the fluoridation of community water supplies for more than 50 years. Fluoride can help prevent dental health problems like tooth decay.

The ADA also says individuals can protect themselves from tooth decay by brushing twice a day and regularly visiting the dentist for teeth cleanings.
