Many Americans experience anxiety before dental care procedures because they fear the appointment might involve discomfort or pain, but advances have been made to reduce these feelings of nervousness.

Some patients decide they need sedatives to remain calm enough for a visit to the dentist, according to ABC News. Others get so nervous they choose not to go to their appointments at all. Fortunately, some dentists are now testing a new technique to remedy this inconvenient and unhealthy problem.

Dr Peter Harnois told the news source he has a drug-free, side effect-free natural process that leaves patients feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Harnois' three-phase technique involves the patient first taking Gamma Amino Butyramino Butyricaba and Itheanine, two natural compounds that have a calming effect, reports the publication. Then the individual puts on a Cranial Electrostimulation Device, which delivers a very light electric current. Step three simply requires the patient to wear dark glasses and listen to music that's designed to induce sleep.

"You don't fall asleep but you get in a state that you are so relaxed there is no more fear and anxiety," said James Poole to ABC. Poole is the CEO of a company that specializes in minimizing patient fear.

The Mayo Clinic says that individuals who frequently experience anxiety attacks might have a panic disorder. Luckily, such a condition can be easily treated.
