Emergency dental care during the holidays

A recent survey conducted by a drug company revealed that one in six Americans have needed emergency dental care in the last year and that most of these individuals were unprepared for the problem.

A lot of households keep a first aid kit, but these do not always contain the sorts of items needed to take care of someone in a dental emergency. The holidays often bring many people together under one roof, meaning this may be a good time to assemble a kit including both first aid and dental care supplies.

"You keep medical supplies on hand for cuts and bruises, but what about your teeth?" asks Dr Brian Gold, a dentist in New York. "It's important to be prepared for a dental emergency in case one happens, especially if the emergency occurs on a weekend or holiday when your dentist isn't available."

Emergency dental care kits can contain a variety of items such as a dental pain reliever that contains benzocaine, temporary dental cement and denture repair products.

The American Dental Association says certain activities can result in dental emergencies. Popcorn kernels and hard candy can crack teeth and individuals with such an injury should try to provide their care provider with as much information regarding the event as possible.
