Not many people think of toothbrushes as cool or amusing gadgets, but that might change thanks to a new development in dental care that could be both fun and good for teeth.

A company in Japan is now selling a toothbrush with a head that is equipped with an internal light-emitting diode (LED), according to InventorSpot.com. And the LED isn't just there for aesthetic purposes, it supposedly improves the tooth-brushing experience.

The company that makes the brush, Beldente, claims the LED has an inhibitory effect on the pathogen that causes periodontal disease, according to the website. The toothbrush sells for about $65, making it more expensive than most of those sold at the local pharmacy. Furthermore, it requires AA batteries, which presents an additional cost to the consumer. A free tube of toothpaste comes with the brush, however.

The Mayo Clinic says that periodontitis is a serious gum infection that can damage both the tissue and bone that support teeth. Although it is common, the infection is preventable by taking reasonable measures to maintain good dental hygiene, like brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.
