Michigan dental care provider wants to make holidays special

A dentist in Michigan plans to provide hundreds of people with free dental care in late November.

Dr Ibrahim Jarjoura and his team will be treating approximately 200 patients for free on November 20, according to the Flint Journal. This is the second year he and his colleagues have held this dental health event and hundreds of people reportedly showed up for treatment in 2008.

"There's a need," said the dentist to the news source. "It struck a chord, so we decided to do it again this year."

Before 2008, Dr Jarjoura's team would organize similar events in which dental care would be exchanged for canned food donations to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, reported the Journal. One patient from Grand Blanc named Alva Owens said she wouldn't have been able to go to the dentist if not for free programs such as this one.

The American Dental Association (ADA) says that foods containing sugars and starches can create plaque that might damage tooth enamel. To prevent this from happening, the ADA recommends brushing twice a day and visiting the dentist regularly.
