Dental health debate: Root canal treatment vs implants

The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) are attempting to determine which of two treatments can be better for dental health.

A news release distributed by the AAID claims that receiving a tooth implant is better than undergoing root canal treatment because the procedure has a higher success rate and is cheaper. The AAE disagrees.

"Both treatments have the same success rates," says Dr Gerald Glickman, president of the AAE. "This whole paradigm is ultimately not about which treatment modality is better, but what is best for each patient. And that is the preservation of the natural dentition."

Regarding a difference in price, Dr Glickman says that a tooth with a root canal doesn't always need additional treatment, while implanted teeth sometimes create complications that can cost money to correct.

Dr Glickman admits there are times when a tooth cannot be saved and that an implant might be the best choice.

The American Dental Association says that a root canal can be a simple procedure that might involve up to three visits to the dentist.
