One-day clinic gives dental care to high school students

Though much of the focus may be on younger children, high school students who may not have access to dental insurance may also be at a risk for having poor dental health.

Recently, a total of 50 students from an Illinois school located in Benton signed up to get dental care thanks to a program called Miles of Smiles, the Benton Evening News reports.

Debbie Wiley, a social worker who works at Benton Consolidated High School, told the news provider this was the first time the program was visiting older children.

"Students received exams, cleanings and fluoride treatments," Wiley said. "We visit schools throughout the state. By law, we can only visit each school once a year. Our team of dental professionals has been working with children for more than 12 years."

According to the Evening News, one student revealed it had been about a decade since her last dental checkup.

Routine dental care is important for children of all ages for them to maintain optimal health. Those who do not see a dentist on a regular basis run the risk of developing tooth decay, which can also lead to other serious health conditions if left untreated.
