Dental care may come through the grapevine

People who love to snack on raisins in between meals may have another reason to smile.

According to a new study, raisins may be beneficial in terms of preventing tooth decay and administering dental care thanks to what researchers are calling "germ-fighters" that have the potential to suppress tooth disease, United Press International report.

The findings were published in the Journal of Nutrition and stated that the oleanolic acid, which is found in raisins, was shown to combat the tooth-disease causing Streptococcus mutans biofilm.

This may be good news for those who have cut out sugary treats in their diet for more fruits and healthier snacks such as raisins.

However, eating handfuls of raisins on a daily basis may not be an adequate alternative to regular dental care.

Daily teeth cleanings are still a must for people to avoid developing tooth decay, a condition that left untreated can lead to heart disease.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health.
