Project aims to give children much-needed dental care

Children who do not have access to dental insurance should not be left to suffer through health problems due to poor dental care.

That's the idea behind the Deamonte Driver Dental Project, which is a multi-school effort occuring in Price George County, Maryland.

Principals, school nurses and parent volunteers comb through various schools to identify children who may be in need of proper dental care.

This past February, the project provided four days of dental care to a total of 170 children at Seat Pleasant Elementary School, the Hudson Valley Press reports.

The project was born out of a tragedy. Deamonte Driver was a seventh grader from Prince George County who died of complications from an abscessed tooth in 2007. According to the news provider, Deamonte's life could have been saved by routine dental visits and an $80 tooth extraction.

While initiatives like the project happening in Maryland is a good start, it does little to substitute for regular dental checkups for young children.

According to the American Dental Association, childhood tooth decay is the single most chronic disease in kids and without administering good dental care, can lead to serious health problems in the future.
