World Oral Health Day to celebrate dental care

World Oral Health Day to celebrate dental care Those too busy to schedule back-to-school dental checkups should be reminded of this important errand and try to visit their dentist as World Oral Health Day approaches on Saturday, September 12.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the FDI World Dental Federation have come together to raise awareness of dental health and how conditions like gum disease can affect world populations.

Tooth decay is one of the world's most widespread dental health problems as it affects both children and adults, starting in young people when their teeth first erupt. Parents often give babies sweet drinks or bottles to keep them quiet, but the sugars in these treats can be a breeding ground for bacteria in the mouth. This leads to caries - or cavities - in babies and preschoolers.

To get your little ones checked out by a dental professional and to start good dental care practices early, it is prudent to schedule regular checkups with a local dentist. The ADA suggests that parents take their offspring in for dental checkups as soon as teeth break through the gumline, or at the child's first birthday.
