One dentist's skills move beyond dental health

All patients hope that their dentist has the best skills available and many will do extensive research to find a provider that is just right for them.

However, Dr Michael Blackmon's clients probably did not anticipate that he had a few hidden talents beyond putting fillings in teeth and helping out with cosmetic dentistry.

This particular dentist used his knowledge of the human body to help design an emergency car seat harness to allow small children to easily take off their seat belts in the event of a car accident. The device also allows others to free trapped children more quickly and efficiently.

Blackmon said that his own children "looked like little jet fighter pilots" when strapped into their car seats, and he wanted to design a better seat belt that fell away from the body like that of a pilot as opposed to more restrictive harnesses.

His story makes it almost tempting to schedule a dental checkup because patients may never know what their dentist does in his or her spare time, and the American Dental Association advises that adults visit their dentist regularly.
