White wine drinkers need dental care too
Updated: 8/10/2009 5:00:21 PM

White wine drinkers need dental care tooIt has long been believed that red wine and coffee are two beverages that lead drinkers to requre teeth whitening treatments. Now new research shows that those who drink white wine should watch their teeth too.

A dental research team at New York University learned that cow teeth immersed in white wine for an hour before being placed in black tea for an hour displayed darker stains than teeth in water, not wine.

In other words, white wine drinkers are also susceptible to teeth staining as much as red wine drinkers and should probably want to consult their dentists about dental care options.

Study lead Dr Wolff explained that the team learned that "the acids in wine create rough spots and grooves that enable chemicals in other beverages that cause staining, such as coffee and tea, to penetrate deeper into the tooth" thus leading to discoloration.

This dentist and the American Dental Association both recommend that people who want stain-free teeth either talk with their dentists about teeth whitening treatments and remember to brush and floss twice each day.
