If you were born with red hair and often squirm at the thought of undergoing a simple tooth extraction or cavity filling, a new study reveals it may be down to the fact that redheads are more susceptible to pain.

According to CNN, the American Dental Association (ADA) learned that individuals with red hair were twice as likely to experience pain at the dentist then those with darker hair, indicating that redheads might be less likely to keep routine dentist's visits.

Furthermore, in 2004, a study showed that individuals with red hair needed 20 percent more anesthetic than individuals with darker or blonde hair.

It is believe that the melanocortin-1 receptor gene that gives redheads their hair and eye color may also cause these individuals to be more sensitive to painful stimuli, the news provider reports.

No matter the hair color, all people should maintain good dental health and visit their dentists on a regular basis, the ADA advises. In addition, everyone should brush their teeth at least twice a day and replace old toothbrushes once every three to four months.
