Survey: Full effect of recession on dental care unclear

Exactly what effect the economic recession has had on how people are using their dental insurance is unclear, according to experts studying the issue, but the pattern may become clearer later this year.

Insurancenews.net reports that a February survey by the Chicago Dental Association of residents of the city found that 22 percent of respondents had a family member in need of dental care but were putting off a visit to the dentist because they could not afford it.

The survey also found that 47 percent of respondents did not have any dental insurance at all.

Those who do have dental insurance through their employer are still coming in for dental checkups and routine dental care, according to the article. What drop off that has been seen may be due to employees being afraid to take time off work.

"We have not seen any significant change in the trend rates being used for dental plans, despite what the ADA is reporting,'' said a representative of Buck Consultants, which conducted a survey of national healthcare trends for the first half of 2009.
