Alternate dental care treatment for receding gums proves stable

Researchers at Tufts University have shown that a less-invasive treatment option for receding gums is stable over three years, which will offer patients a new option for dental care in the future.

"Patients have a less invasive treatment option for receding gums and we now have evidence to support the stability of this relatively painless procedure," said Terrence Griffin, of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. "Instead of leaving the dental office with stitches in the roof of their mouth, a patient leaves with a small bandage on the arm that can be removed in an hour."

Dentists have traditionally relied on gum grafting surgery, which requires surgically cutting tissue from the roof of the mouth and using it to replace the gum tissue lost around the teeth. The new approach uses a graft soaked in the patient's platelets, using blood drawn in the same visit.

Gum disease has been one of the primary linkages between dental health and overall health and recently dentists have been encouraged to inform patients with gum disease of their health risks. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults over 35.
