Sports dentistry specialized dental careSports dentists don't just work on the superstars and Olympic athletes; their patients include little league kids and college students.

But no matter how prestigious or humble the clientele, they sports dentists at the 2009 Academy for Sports Dentistry Annual Symposium in Chicago last month agreed on the importance of protecting the dental health of their patients and the fact that private practice dentists are seeing more sports field injuries end up at their office.

"They are getting more and more questions from patients, like 'I have a tooth in my hand…what do I do with it?'," said ASD membership chair Dr Jeffrey Lloyd in an article on the American Dental Association's website. Lloyd said that these dentists have joined the ASD because they" want to be able to make a difference at the community level."

The ADA recommends holding a knocked out tooth by the crown and rinsing off the root of the tooth in water if it is dirty. If possible, the tooth should be gently inserted and held in its socket. If that isn't possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and get to the dentist quickly.
