The American Journal of Cardiology (AJC) and the Journal of Periodontology (JOP), have teamed up to publish new recommended guidelines for treating the link between dental care and cardiovascular care.

Evidence has been growing for years of a link between heart disease and gum disease, and now the medical community is trying to provide advice for both sets of specialists to better treat the overlap between these conditions.

The new guidelines contains clinical recommendations for both medical and dental professionals to use for these patients, and may result in a dentist asking questions about heart health and the history of heart disease in a patient's family when they come in for dental care.

"Inflammation is a major risk factor for heart disease, and periodontal disease may increase the inflammation level throughout the body," said Kenneth Kornman, Editor of the JOP and a co-author of the consensus report. "Since several studies have shown that patients with periodontal disease have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, we felt it was important to develop clinical recommendations for our respective specialties."

Catching diseases earlier is always a better choice, almost always allowing cheaper and more effective treatment, something both dentists and cardiologists want for their patients.
