Lack of fluoride in Portland may harm dental health

While many places in the U.S. have embraced water fluoridation, one Pacific Northwest city has yet to utilize the technology, which some health officials say is harming the area's dental health.

Recently in a column that appeared in the Oregonian, journalist Rick Attig called the lack of fluoridation in the state a harmful policy affecting the youth and described the area as the place to go for tooth decay.

Portland's kids, especially those in low-income families, will continue to pay the price for Oregon's backward policy," Attig wrote in the column. "There's overwhelming evidence that children who grow up in communities without fluoridated water suffer much more, and much worse, dental decay."

The American Dental Association endorses the fluoridation of community water supplies and the use of fluoride-containing products as safe and effective measures for preventing tooth decay, a condition the organization has called the most common chronic childhood disease.

For optimal dental health, the ADA recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and scheduling dental checkups regularly.
