Director: Fluoride could improve dental health of children

By adding fluoride to San Diego's drinking water, incidences of childhood tooth decay may be reduced, according to local dental health officials.

Current figures shows the fluoride content is at varying levels and reportedly goes from 15 percent to 26 percent in the city's water supply, the Union-Tribune reports. Other counties reportedly have 100 percent of its water fluoridated.

"Fluoride can actually reverse the enamel breakdown of drinking soda and juice," Joel Cohen, policy and community education director of the Dental Health Foundation, told the news provider. "If you get a 1-year-old a fluoride varnish, you can help prevent tooth decay."

San Diego dentists also suggested families not use water-filtration devices in the home, as it can remove the fluoride from the city's drinking water and thus take away aspects of dental care from the home, according to the article.

The American Dental Association has called childhood tooth decay the single most common chronic childhood disease. Past research has shown fluoride, either through toothpaste or drinking water, can make the tooth structure stronger and more resistant to acid attacks.
