Study: Early dental care will help city youth

New research has emerged showing that early preventative dental care may more important for infants and toddlers than some people realize.

Researchers from the University of Maryland in Baltimore has found that infants and toddlers who received early dental care had better dental health when compared to children who had no such care administered to them.

A total of 219 children, who were aged 6 to 27 months, were examined for the 26-month study at a pediatric care clinic at the school that mostly serves low-income residents. Those who received the early care were found to have more than eight times less cavity-causing bacteria during a dental checkup.

Dr. Glenn Minah, who led the study, said tooth decay can begin in toddlers with the first sign of a tooth and that children with early dental caries have a higher risk for developing new carious lesions.

The American Dental Association considers childhood tooth decay the single most common chronic childhood disease and recommends parents schedule a dental appointment for their child by their first birthday as well as administering routine dental care.
