Doctor gives dental care advice to diabetics People living with a certain medical condition may have different dental care requirements than others, a dentist said at a recent Diabetes Support group in Iowa.

Dr. James Pollard presented a program to diabetic patients entitled Chew on This and talked about how certain things can affect one's dental health, specifically for people living with diabetes, the Iowa Newspaper Boone News Republican reports.

"With carbohydrates being broken down in the mouth and the people that have diabetes having a higher level of the sugar in their saliva - that's why the bacteria grow," said Pollard during the presentation, according to the article.

Diabetes are more likely to experience dry mouth, which can deter saliva from acting as a buffer between foods and drinks, according to the dentist. "The saliva buffers the acids that are in the foods and beverages that we consume and also that are produced by the bacteria in our mouths," Pollard said.

One beverage the dentist said can harm dental health is Mountain Dew, which he described as a "triple whammy for the teeth" because the drink consists of citrus acid, caffeine and sugar.
