Poor dental health increasing in infants
Updated: 3/12/2009 11:00:20 AM
Poor dental health increasing in infantsTooth decay in baby teeth is increasing in the U.S. with one in every five 3-year-olds suffering from the condition, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Children with poor dental health are more apt to suffer infections and inflammation, Dr. Joel Berg, dental director at Seattle Children's Hospital, told the LivingstonDaily.com.

"Not a week goes by that we don’t see children admitted with facial swelling and other infections that started with cavities in baby teeth," said Berg. "Children are coming to the emergency room with pain and swelling, and it is preventable."

The American Dental Association recommends parents use special dental care instruments to administer a daily teeth cleaning on their newborns, even if teeth have yet to appear. A child's first dental checkup should be scheduled before or near their first birthday, according to the organization.

If left untreated, poor dental health can affect a child's overall health and, in some instances, affect their performance in school, according to the article.

The ADA also recommends cutting back on sugary snacks and using fluoride to help a child clean their teeth.
