“FROM BOYS TO MEN provides guidelines and tips on how to make family health-care decisions and encourage males to lead healthy lives.” -Chicago Daily Herald

“This general medical guide addresses common health ailments and problems, explains reasons for men’s attitudes and behaviors and suggests how to work with these challenges.” –The Orange County Register

In 2000, the Commonwealth Fund, a highly respected health research organization, published a report on how men looked after their health. For the study, fifteen hundred men were surveyed regarding their health habits. Their findings were alarming:

· One man in three had no regular doctor to go to.

· One in four had not been to a doctor at all in the year before the survey.

· One third of the men over age fifty had not been screened for prostate cancer or colon cancer in the past five years.

· One fourth of the men said they would wait as long as possible before seeing a doctor if they felt sick, were in pain, or worried about their health.

Now take into consideration that women make three-quarters of the health care decisions for their families. Dr. Emily Senay, a CBS Medical Correspondent, hopes that women will now take action and become more knowledgeable about the health of the boys and men in their families. FROM BOYS TO MEN: A Woman’s Guide to the Health of Husbands, Partners, Sons, Fathers, and Brothers (Fireside/Simon and Schuster; March 2005; 0-7432-6689-7; $16.00) now appearing in paperback, is the first book on the health of boys and men designed for the women who take care of them.

With an intimate and expert voice, Dr. Senay guides wives, partners, mothers, sisters, and daughters through the stages of a man’s life, offering pragmatic information on how to foster healthy sons and husbands. Topics in FROM BOYS TO MEN range from health issues unique to baby boys, to knowing how and when to discuss sexuality with a teenager, to recognizing and treating depression and stress in adult males.

As a mother, wife, daughter, and doctor, Dr. Senay shares her readers’ concern for the men in their lives. In FROM BOYS TO MEN Dr. Senay provides the answers women have been seeking in hopes that women will become more educated about the health needs and major threats that both boys and men face. By passing on this information to the men in their lives, men can start to take an active role in their own health, and set an example for their sons on how to live healthier.
