For adults and children who are afraid of sitting in the dentist's chair, for whatever reason, there may be ways to reduce the anxiety they feel when getting dental care.

The Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) states that anxiety can be easily managed and, in some cases, preventable.

Children should maintain regular dental checkups every six months to maintain good dental health and to build a comfort level with the dentist. The earlier a child is brought to the dentist, the more comfortable they may feel in it when they are older. The American Dental Association recommends children have their first appointment by their first birthday.

Parents should avoid bribing their child or using the dentist's office as a form of punishment, said the PDA.

Adults who are nervous during dental appointments may want to schedule the time when they may feel less rushed such as the evening or weekend, according to the PDA. Those who are bothered by the high-pitched sound of a drill may want to bring their MP3 player to listen to their favorite music.

Finally, the PDA encourages people to share their fears with dentists, who may be able to address their concerns.
