Are Your Vitamins Hazardous to Your Health?
Updated: 2/20/2009 11:00:37 AM
(ARA) - Taking vitamins is good for you, right? Not necessarily. While vitamin supplements derived from whole food sources can help you get the nutrients you need on a daily basis, prolonged use of synthetic vitamins may actually put your health at risk, some experts believe.

The vast majority of vitamin supplements sold today are made with synthetic ingredients -- ingredients that your body doesn't recognize as food and won't metabolize as well as the vitamins you get when you eat whole foods.

"I would say 99.9 percent of supplements use synthetic vitamins," says registered dietician Michelle Bacarella. Processed in laboratories at high temperatures, these products may contain petroleum-derived chemical solvents like ethyl cellulose, coal tar and acetone, and are coated with methylene chloride, a carcinogenic material.

Many people are sensitive to the chemicals used in creating and processing synthetic vitamins. If you're one of them, prolonged use of synthetic supplements may lead to a buildup of toxins in your liver, and allergy-like symptoms that include fatigue, memory loss, depression and insomnia.

"If you look at a supplement label and you don't even recognize the list of chemicals, it's very easy to recognize that's a synthetic vitamin," says Bacarella, creator of 9 A Day Plus, a whole food vitamin supplement. These synthetics are actually just fractional chemicals -- containing only fractional portions of the whole vitamin complex.

Don't, however, abandon altogether the idea of dietary supplementation. The American Medical Association recommends vitamin supplementation. It's nearly impossible to get the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of 10 essential vitamins and minerals through diet alone. The produce we purchase in grocery stores contains fewer vitamins and minerals than they did half a century ago because soils have become severely depleted of life-sustaining nutrients.

In fact, one U.S. Department of Agriculture study of 50,000 people, performed in the 1980s, found that not even one person was getting the RDA of vitamins and minerals.

So supplementation is essential, but it's important to supplement wisely. Clear your medicine cabinet of synthetic vitamins that may do more harm than good and opt for an all-natural whole food supplement like 9 A Day Plus.

9 A Day Plus contains vitamins derived from whole food sources, so it includes no synthetic products and only the whole, natural vitamin complexes found in whole foods. Simply comparing the label of 9 A Day Plus to your favorite synthetic supplement will be an eye-opening experience.

Vitamin supplementation is essential to good health, but only if you’re taking the right kind of vitamins. To learn more about the difference between whole food vitamins and synthetics, visit www.9adayplus.com. Copyright ©, ARAnet, Inc.
