Poor diet can affect a child's dental health

As the American Dental Association (ADA) celebrates National Children's Dental Health Month, parents are reminded dental care also involves monitoring what their child may be eating.

Dental Health Month incorporates various states raising awareness of dental care for children by providing free teeth cleanings and dental examinations for children who may not have access to dental insurance.

However, having optimal dental health does not come from brushing alone. Eating foods high in fat, calories and sugar can wreak havoc in a child's month and make them susceptible to tooth decay, one of the more chronic conditions in childhood which can lead to serious conditions if untreated.

The website KCRA.com recommends parents focus on incorporating a balanced diet of whole foods and a reduction in dietary fat. Reducing calories in child's diet is not recommended. The ADA suggests avoiding sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks and non-nutritious snack foods.

While the ADA has said toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, a child's toothbrush may have to be replaced sooner, as they have the tendency to wear out quicker.
