Ohio celebrates dental care with children's event

To celebrate the national Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program next month, a day-long event will be held at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine to promote early dental health among children.

An estimated 300 children from area elementary schools and Cleveland's Boys & Girls Club will receive free dental care during the event.

The event is one of almost 100 different GKAS events occurring around the state on February 6th, with approximately 1,600 volunteers providing free dental care to an estimated 20,000 Ohio children who may not have access to dental insurance.

GKAS was started by the American Dental Association and is an annual event with each state incorporating different events to celebrate it. In the first six years of implementing the program, Ohio dental volunteers have proved more than $4.9 million in free dental services to about 123,000 of the state's children.

"Ohio dentists continue to reach out to children in need and are making a real difference in these children's oral and overall health," Dr Burton Job, president of the Ohio Dental Association, said.
