Dentists and dental professionals in Minnesota area combining their efforts to provide free dental care to families who may not be able to afford it.

The Minnesota Dental Association is sponsoring the event, titled Give Kids a Smile, in an effort to improve children's dental health and access to care. This is the 7th year for the program, which has grown into one of the largest initiatives aimed at providing free dental care to children who may not be covered under dental insurance.

For interested residents, the event takes place on February 6th and the 7th when dentists' offices around the state will open their doors for the free dental care. Families interested in scheduling an appointment should call United Way 211.

"Dentists are here to help children who need care. We spend these two days every year opening our offices without any charge to the public as one way of answering that call," said Dr Lee Jess, president of the Minnesota Dental Association.

Childhood tooth decay is one of the most common diseases for children and can be avoided through a regular teeth cleaning and ongoing dental care.
