Stress from recession may affect dental health
Updated: 12/22/2008 6:00:20 PM

Stress from financial uncertainty may lead to bad dental healthWith the country in a recession, the American public may be at an increased risk for worsening their dental health, just by naturally worrying about their bank accounts and pay checks.

The stress produced from the financial malaise can give rise to gum disease, which can deteriorate years of proper dental care and lead to worse health problems, the Times of India reports.

Mahesh Verma, principal of the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, told the news provider recent studies showed financial stress is one of the major causes of increasing dental health problems.

"Economic stress may lead to people grinding more teeth and damages dental health. With the result that affected people require more extensive corrective procedures such as dental implants or gum grafting," said Verma.

Past research has shown that gum infection may contribute to the development of heart disease and increase the risk of stroke, according to the article. It can also complicate the health of diabetics and people who are suffering from respiratory disease.
